DescriptionAEC-70-8743 BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA. . .PHOTOELECTRON SPECTROSCOPY OP BIOLOGICALLY IMPORTANT MOLECULES . . .This high-resolution, iron-free magnetic spectrometer is used at Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley, to measure the kinetic energy of electrons given off when the molecules are bombarded with X-rays. The large coils surrounding the spectrometer cancel the earth's magnetic field, which otherwise would interfere with the operation of the instrument. From the spectrometer data, the energy that binds the electrons to atoms can be found. Slight variations in this energy (which is sensitive to the environment of the electrons) reveal the nature of chemical bonding to the molecules under study, increasing the knowledge of the role of molecules in the physical processes of biological systems.
