Archives Catalogue
What IAEA records can I find in this catalogue?
The IAEA Archives holds official records documenting the Agency's programme activities as well as historical material in a variety of media, including a sizeable photo collection. Not all Agency records are retained permanently as archives; all Agency records are subject to retention policies, some of which designate records for destruction at the end of their retention period. The repositories comprise over 10,000 linear shelf metres of records.
The IAEA Archives also contains a collection of over 10,000 publications, including many IAEA Scientific and Technical publications (such as STI/PUBs, STI/DOCs and TECDOCs). This publications collection can be searched separately from the main IAEA Archives and Records Centre holdings. Other sources for IAEA publications are the IAEA Library and the IAEA Publications portal.
Is the full catalogue available to all users?
No. Due to information security and privacy policies, we do not publish detailed descriptions of classified records. You will be able to find summaries of these records as series level descriptions. If you have questions about these records, would like to submit a declassification request, or have questions about searching the catalogue, please contact the Archives Contact Point.
How do I use it?
Start with Simple search to search both the titles and descriptions of records.
If you want to limit your search, e.g. to a particular time period or a particular material type, use Advanced search.
Expert search gives the same options as Advanced search but allows you to combine fields into complex queries using AND or OR statements.
How can I access the records that I find?
Some digital assets (e.g. digitised copies of the photo collection and audio files) can be viewed directly in the catalogue. The IAEA Archives holds other digital assets, including video material, digitised records series, and derestricted Board of Governors documents, that are available on request to the Archives Contact Point. The digitisation of archives is an ongoing process that over time will greatly enhance the accessibility of the collection.
Unclassified records can be made available for consultation in the IAEA Archives Reading Room. To arrange this, please submit the researcher form along with a signed copy of the Reading Room Protocol (both of which are available on this site) and submit them at least one month in advance of your intended visit. Please use the catalogue functionality to select the records which you would like to consult (up to five records per day). Every requested file is reviewed based on our information security management system and privacy policies, and therefore it is possible that requested records may not be accessible.
If you have further questions, you can contact the Archives Contact Point directly.
Can I re-use images from this catalogue?
Please check with the Archives Contact Point first. The IAEA is not the copyright holder of all images in this catalogue and restrictions on the re-use of images may apply.
Where images can be re-used, the Archives Unit can provide high quality versions.
What if I can't find the record that I'm looking for?
Please contact the Archives Contact Point for assistance. This catalogue does not describe the entirety of the IAEA Archives' holdings. Staff of the Archives Unit are on hand to assist with more complex queries.
