说明6726/F/22a. HORTICULTURAL AND NUTRITION EDUCATION PROJECT, SENEGAL, MAY 1968. The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)/UNICEF Applied Nutrition Programme is aiding several African countries in cooperating rural education programmes into their curricular by establishing school gardens. Children are being introduced to and taught the importance of the various nutrients needed for balance daily diet by growing the own fruits and vegetables. In Senegal, there are now 250 school gardens and school canteens within the primary schools. Since rural Senegalese sometimes end their formal education at the primary level, FAO and UNICEF are. also assisting the Senegalese Ministry of Education in rural education courses in primary schools which provide useful vocational training. At this primary school in the Cap Vert region and in many other Senegalese schools, water needed for growing vegetable constitutes a major problem. These students must carry water from a well for their school garden. FAO photo by M. Benaissa
