The first electricity generated by the newly completed Kainji dam in Northern Nigeria on the Niger River, began applying the Nigerian national grid on December 22, 1968. Completed on schedule in December, the dam offers the prospect of adequate power for agricultural and industrial development until 1980, controlled navigational facilities on the Nige, the opening up of land through irrigation and the possibility of developing economical fisheries. The dam was constructed following details surveys and recommendations by the UN Special Fund (now UN Development programmes (UNDP))with the International bank for reconstruction and development (IBRD)as Executing agency. Financing for construction was provided through an IBRD loan, through credits from Government of Canada, Italy, United Kingdom, the United States and the Netherlands, and through the Nigerian Governments provision of local costs.
