DescriptionThe biggest magneto-hydrodynamic power conversion unit existing at present and being operated with noble gas is to be found in the Juelich Nuclear Research Centre. The magnetic field (B= 40 kG) for the 1 m MHD channel is generated by a superconductive magnet. The cycle can work on argon or helium. The relevant data for argon (or helium) are as follows: Circulation quantity 5 (0.7) kg/sec; speed of gas flow in the channel: Mach 0.95 (0.55). Gas temperature: 1500 C; thermal input power: 4 MW.
