DescripciónWYLFA NUCLEAR POWER STATION. The CEGB's 1,180 MW Magnox power station at Wylfa in Anglesey, North Wales. Great care has been taken to preserve the natural amenity of the area and scheme was undertaken in which artificial hills 100ft high and blend the station with the surrounding countryside. Compactness of building layout has been achieved by placing the common equipment and control rooms between the two reactor structures in a single building. With this type of design it is possible to use the same servicing machine in both reactors. The reactor building houses two of the world's largest pre-stressed spherical concrete pressure vessels. A novel method of spent fuel storage is used at Wylfa. This is a dry store in which the irradiated fuel is stacked in nests of tubes filled with dry CO2, externally cooled by air. This system is unique to Wylfa and replaces the usual cooling pond. Wylfa is the eighth and last first-generation Magnox station to be built. Started in September 1963 the station was officially opened on 12th May 1972. material
