DescripciónROPS SAH POP. DROUGHT IN UPPER VOLTA. UN 122.363 14 June 1973. Five years of subnormal rainfall has brought severe drought and tragedy to Upper Volta, one of the six affected countries of the Sahelien Zone along the southern edge of the Sahara. The others are, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Mali and Chad. Secretary General Waldheim has designated the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). as the focal point to concentrate the emergency efforts of the United nations system to assist these drought stricken countries. During his visit to the FAO 34-nation Council on 15 June, President Sangoule of Upper. Volta, declared that, with his nation gripped in the worst drought of it`s history, "the surviral of our people is truly at stake". Mali nomads came to Upper Volta in search of pasture but all they found was a wasteland.
