Description(ATM:PCS:MED:THAI*). MEDICAL RESEARCH PROGRAMS IN THAILAND AIDED BY IAEA. UN 62691 - Bangkok, 1959. An international Atomic Energy Agency expert, Mr. Norman Veall (United Kingdom), has been working in Bangkok helping Thai medical research teams to establish procedures in the use of radioisotopes and radioactive tracer techniques. The request for an expert was initiated by the Thai Atomic Energy Commission for Peace through the UN Technical Assistance Board to the IAEA. This photograph shows the performance of a test in which some of a patient's red blood cells have been labelled with radioactive chromium and re-injected. Radioactivity measurements over different parts of the body can then indicate whether or not the spleen is mainly responsible for a particular type of inherited anemia from which the patient is suffering, and the spleen can be subsequently removed if found responsible. Dr. Termsri CHOMNIJARAKIJ of the School of Medical Technology, and Mr. VEALL, the IAEA expert, are seen measuring the uptake of radiochromium in the patient’s spleen with the aid of a gamma-ray counter.
