DescriptionAEC-71-9089 ANALYSIS OF CELL SIZES. . . A new tool, a particle-size analyzer, that uses a small computer as an integral part of its operation, is fully operational at Lawrence Radiation Laboratory's Donner Laboratory of Medical Physics, providing an excellent method for studying complex systems of biological particles. The apparatus has been valuable in correlating the size of mammalian cells with specific stages in their life cycle. Since certain stages of cell development are characterised by corresponding cell volumes, changes in volume can indicate changes in the biological state of the cells. The method has been successfully applied to the counting and sizing of blood and bone marrow cells; spermatozoa, and mixtures of mammalian chromosomes. The particle sizer-computer combination determines the size of cells; records how many of each size are present in a mixture; plays back the data to experimenters; and makes other calculations - - almost instantaneously. But the value of the device is greatest when used following, separation into subclasses: according to size, electric charge, or other physical property. Credit: Laurence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley
