This facility encapsulates strontium-90 and cesium-137, the two high-heat emitting isotopes which are part of the high-level radioactive liquid wastes stored in underground tanks. These two isotopes are separate from other wastes so that the other wastes can be solidified in the same tanks. Strontium-90 and cesium-137 are then converted into solids and doubly encapsulated m stainless steel or Hastelloy metal containers. Here an operator is shown at one of the encapsulation facility’s seven processing cells using remote manipulators to place a capsule in the welder. Three feet of glass provide radiation shielding for the operator.
