الوصفA facility for handling solid waste having low radioactivity is being erected at Studsvik. It contains an incinerator in which combustible waste can be reduced to about 5% of its original volume. Incombustible but bulky waste can be compressed in a baling press. To prevent radioactive dust from this operation from endangering those working in the facility, the press is located in a special room. Here, it is possible to work in protective clothing provided with fresh-air breathing apparatus. The ashes from the incinerator and other waste are encased in concrete so that they cannot spread or emanate radiation during continued storage. It is expected that this facility will he completed at the beginning of 1976. PHOTO: AB Atomenergi, Sweden April 1976
