الوصفAEC-56-5548 CHESWICK, PENNSYLVANIA... These four "canned" motor pumps -- the world's largest - are shown during construction here at the atomic equipment department plant of Westinghouse Electric Corporation. The pumps, each rated at approximately 1600 horsepower, will be installed in the nation's first full-scale atomic electric generating station at Shippingport, Pa. Canned motor pumps were developed by Westinghouse engineers and scientists for the Atomic Energy Commission to prevent leakage of radioactive water in nuclear power plants. Each of these pumps weighs nearly 14 tons, stands 10 feet high and is 4 feet in diameter. The capacity of each pump is 18,300 gallons per minute at a pressure of approximately 2000 pounds per square inch and temperature up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Materials used in these pumps are stainless steel; Inconel, a nickel alloy, used as sheath around the motor; and graphitar, a carbon graphite compound, for the bearings.
