الوصفAEC-57-5870 SHIPPINGPORT, PENNSYLVANIA... This photograph, looking north, across the Ohio River near the town of Shippingport, Pa., shows the world's first full-scale atomic-electric power plant devoted exclusively to serve civilian needs. Westinghouse Electric Corporation designed and developed the nuclear reactor under contract with the Atomic Energy Commission. Duquesne Light Company of Pittsburgh is building then conventional portion of the plant and wi11 operate the entire facility. The lone "smokestack," which is in contrast to the usual group of "stacks" seen at conventional power plants, is for ventilation purposes only in one section of the building. The "heart," or nuclear portion of the plant, is located in the dark building in the center of this photograph. Auxiliary buildings, including maintenance, storage and office space, are grouped around the main structure. Credit: Westinghouse Electric Corporation
