الوصفAEC-72-9072 EEFECT OF ATOM ARRANGEMENT ON FRACTURE … Scanning electron microphot (made at 250X) taken at the University of Maryland shows typical fracture surface observed in an iron-aluminium atom alloy in which the iron and aluminium atoms are aligned in an ordered 3 dimensional “checkerboard” type array. The various multifaceted bodies represent grains between which the fracture has occurred and is a characteristic feature of ordered alloys. This order arrangement is usually destroyed when an alloy (of two major kinds of mental atoms) is heated because of the thermal agitation of the alloy’s atoms. Credit: University of Maryland
