DescriptionExhibit: The United Nations and Nuclear Disarmament - achievements on the way to a nuclear-weapon-free world. The exhibit portrays the history of UN efforts, from the dawn of the nuclear age to the present in grappling with one of the most urgent issues of the second half of the 20th century - nuclear weapons. The exhibit was organized by 3 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) associated with the UN DPI: (1) Fusen heshi no kai (veterans against war, Japan), (2) Veterans for peace (USA), (3) Franciscans International. It was co-sponsored by the UN Centre for Disarmament Affairs and the NGO Committee on Disarmament (NY) and supported by the Permament Mission of Japan to the United Nations. Mr. William Epstein, former Director of the UN Centre for Disarmament presented the exhibit at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) on 15 March 1999. Also present: Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, IAEA Director General and Dr. Wolfgang Hoffmann, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.
