DescriptionMr. Allan Douglas McKnight (Australia) has been appointed Inspector General to head the Department of Safeguards and Inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Department of Safeguards and Inspection is responsible for preventing that projects assisted by the Agency are used for military purposes, and to administer such safeguards in Member States at their request. Mr McKnight will assume his duties with IAEA on 14 September 1964. Mr. McKnight, C.B.E., Executive Commissioner, Australian Atomic Energy Commission from March 1958, has been the representative of his country to the Agency since 1959 and served as Chairman of the Board of Governors 1960-61. He was also Chairman of the main committee of the International Conference on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage held from 29 April to 19 May 1963 in Vienna. Born in 1918 in Drummoyne, N.S.W., Australia, he was educated at Fort Street Boys High School, Sydney, and Sydney University, where he became a Bachelor of Law in 1938. His previous posts were: 1945-1950, Legal Officer, Australian Attorney-General's Department; 1951-1954, Assistant Secretary, Prime Minister's Department; 1955-1958, Secretary, Department of Army; besides, he was a Lecturer in Law, Canberra University College, 1945-1952, and a Member of Council at the same institute from 1954-1955.
