DescriptionConstruction work on the International Atomic Energy Agency's laboratory at Seibersdorf near Vienna was inaugurated by IAEA's Director General, Mr. Sterling Cole, today. Also present were Mr. John A. McCone, head of the United States delegation to the third General Conference of IAEA and Chairman of the US Atomic Energy Commission; Mr. Henry Seligman, Deputy Director General of IAEA; Dr. Michael Higatsberger and Dr. Raphael Spann, Managing Directors of the Oesterreichische Studiengesellschaft fuer Atomenergie (Austrian Research Society for Atomic Energy) and the mayor of Seibersdorf, on whose fields the laboratory is going to be built. 600,000 $, the estimated cost for construction and equipment, was donated by the United States Government. Mr. Sterling Cole, Director of the IAEA deposited an engraved coin in the first load of cement poured into the now laboratory's foundations. The medal shows on its obverse the emblem of the Agency and the words “First laboratory IAEA” and on the reverse the date of the start of construction work, 28.9.1959. IAEA/28 September 1959/No.496.
