DescriptionA Whole Body Counter, making it possible to detect, identify and measure very small amounts of radioactivity in human beings, set up by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at its headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The radioactivity of the body may be due to the natural radioactivity of elements which are its normal components, or to radioactivity introduced accidentally, through occupational exposure, or deliberately in the course of medical treatment. The picture shows the 50 ton steel chamber that shields the radiation detector (suspended above the patient) from outside radiation. The chamber walls are about 7” thick. This Whole Body Counter was largely developed and built in the IAEA's own workshop and laboratories. IAEA/June 1962/No. 976. Please credit IAEA
