DescriptionWork designed to help apply nuclear techniques in research to increase the production of high quality food and to prevent food losses caused by insects and other pests is carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Almost every aspect of food and agriculture is dealt with. International coordinated programmes of research have been established in soil fertility and water supply, crop mutation, plant breeding, insect control, animal production, food preservation and food protection. The photograph shows the apparatus used in the IAEA laboratory at Seibersdorf near Vienna for acid digestion of plant materials for nitrogen analysis - part of the study to find better ways of using fertilizer and improving plant nutrition.
