DescriptionAEC-68-8466 VESSEL COMES BARGING IN. . .The largest nuclear reactors vessel ever built arrived at Commonwealth Edison Company's Dresden nuclear power station near Morris, Illinois. It is shown here (11-29-68) at Marseilles with just 25 miles left of a 740-mile waterway journey on the Ohio, Mississippi, and Illinois rivers. When installed and fuelled, the 800-ton nuclear furnace will supply steam to the Dresden Unit 2 turbine-generator, an 809,0000-kilowatt addition scheduled for service in 1969. Fabricated at the Mount Vernon, Indiana plant of Babcock & Wilcox Company, the 72-foot long reactor vessel was transported on a specially built barge of the Valley Line Company. General Electric Company is prime contractor on the Dresden project which will; include a similar unit, Dresden 3, scheduled for service in 1970. Credit: Commonwealth Edison Company
