DescriptionAEC-71-9087 GALLIUM-67 FOR TUMOR SCANNING... Staff members of Medical Division of Oak Ridge Associated Universities are shown examining a whole-body scan of a patient with malignant lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes). The physician is pointing to an area of concentration of gallium-67 in the neck region - the site of tumor growth in lymph nodes. Concentrations of the radioisotope in the trunk are normal but vary with the patient. This promising discovery at the ORAU Medical Division in a lymphoma patient has now been confirmed in a variety of human and animal tumors at ORAU and elsewhere. Neither the mechanism of uptake, nor the reason why some tumors take up the material less avidly than others, is known. Credit: Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Inc.
