DescriptionAEC-69-8552 OAK RIDGE, TENNESSEE. . .SKIN GRAFTS IN NATURAL CHIMERA TWINS. ..Long-term skin graft studies with marmosets have shown that there is a state of immunologic tolerance in chimeric (male-female) twins .Photo shows 4-week-old male-female marmoset twins in the colony maintained at Oak Ridge Associated Universities. Cell chimerism was determined by sex chromosome analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The number of opposite sex cells in these animals may often be as high as 90 percent and as low as 5 percent of the total population. The small South American monkeys are very active breeders and since twins are born about 80 percent of the time, they are extremely useful in studies on immunology between blood relations.
