DescriptionAEC-70-8751 LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA. . .WHOLE-BODY COUNTING OF SMALL ANIMALS. . .Photo shows dog being prepared for whole-body counting with lithium-drifted germanium solid-state detector. Such detectors give extremely good energy resolution in gamma ray spectroscopy, but because of their small size they have been of limited usefulness in the whole-body counting of animals the size of this dog. At the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore, a technique has been developed whereby several detectors are used simultaneously to give an effective surface large enough to do the job. The tank above the animal contains liquid nitrogen which is used to maintain the solid-state detectors at their operating temperatures (-l86° C.) (-303° F.). The holes and slots in the plastic restrainer are used to align the animal. Credit: Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Livermore
