DescriptionAEC-71-9076 COSMIC RAYS DEEP UNDERGROUND. . .The first observation of cosmic ray-produced neutrons has been reported from the joint experiment being conducted by the University of California (Irvine), Case Western Reserve University (Ohio), and the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa). Photo shows an end view of the high energy cosmic ray neutrino detector installed in a South African gold mine, 10,788 feet underground. The detectors senses neutrinos through the muons produced from neutrino collisions in the surrounding rock. This detector is the largest particle detector of its kind. Taken together with its rock neutrino convertor, it has effective sensitive mass of a few thousand tons. The detector tunnel is 10 feet square and 440 feet long. The complete detector consists of 60 scintillation detectors, each one approximately 2 feet high and 18 feet long. Credit: University of California (Irvine)
