DescriptionAJ 6489C THE STEAM GENERATING WATER REACTPR (SGHWR) AT WINFRITH DORSET. The winfrith SGHWR is a direct cycle, pressure tube reactor using light water as the coolant. The core of the reactor consists of a bank of zirconium alloy pressure tubes which pass through vertical tubes forming part of an aluminium alloy tank, or calandria, containing heavy water as the principal moderator. Nuclear fuel is positioned in the pressure tubes and light water is circulated through these tubes and over the fuel. Heat generated in the fuel causes the water to boil, and the steam produced is separated from the light water in steam drums and passed directly to the turbo-alternator. The condensate from the turbine is returned to be mixed with the circulating coolant. Pull design power of lOOMW(e) was reached on the 25th January 1968. View of the loop control room.
